1971 Miss Hallmark Homes 09/24/2015 This is a look at what might be my newest product - scale reproductions of hydroplanes. This is a model of the 1971 Miss Hallmark Homes which was driven by Lief Borgerson in the Gold Cup of 1971. This particular boat was also the national high points champion back in 1968 as the Miss Bardahl. Unfortunately the boat got washed down in the first heat and sunk to the bottom of the river. The model is 3D printed from PLA, then sanding, paint, a few water-slide decals later you have the finished

Vintage Hydroplanes: The Karelsen Hulls 08/31/2015 As my next project for the 3D printer I have started modeling and looking into making some small scale models of hydroplanes. The first model will be the classic 30' round-nose design of Ed Karelsen. The model will be just under 7" long, so that it fits on my 8 inch printer bed. As for the real boat: The round-nosed Karelsen hulls pretty much defined the state-of-the-art in Unlimited hydroplane hull design in the late-1960s and early-1970s. The first round-nosed Karelsen Unlimited was the

History of the Allison 08/25/2015 The Allison V-1710 was an important hydroplane powerplant from the dawn of the modern piston era after WWII until the turbine engine retired these engineering marvels. Thanks to the availability of high-powered airplane engines from WWII, the Gold Cup class metamorphosed into the Unlimited Class, a true national circuit which remains active to this day. In 1946 the Miss Golden Gate III became the first hydroplane to be powered by an Allison V-1710 -- she was designed and driven by Dan Arena.
